Steven J. Bell, Unbundled and Rebooted: Alt-Librarians for
Disrupted Higher Ed

Presentation Handout (PDF document)

Steven J. Bell is the Associate University Librarian for Research and Instructional Services at Temple University. He is serving as the president of ACRL for 2012-13. He writes and speaks about academic librarianship, learning technologies, library management, higher education, design thinking, and user experience. Steven is a co-founder of the Blended Librarian's Online Learning Community on the Learning Times Network and enjoys delivering virtual presentations. To successfully integrate academic libraries into the future of higher education, academic librarians must grasp the challenges facing their parent institutions and the industry at large. A new wave of entrepreneurially-minded higher education ventures is leading to the unbundling of the college experience. In the face of disruption, traditional colleges and universities know they must retool and are exploring how to best reboot themselves. He will share ideas for and engage participants in managing change to enable academic librarians to shape the future of their institutions by leading from within. In a landscape of alt-higher ed, alt-academic librarians can lead the effort to strengthen their institution's ability to be disruptive, not disrupted. In this presentation, he will explore these disruptive trends and their potential impact on our libraries.
